There I was in front of the school, letting off my three kids just before heading off to the insurance agency where I worked. Then, just as I was set to drive off, another parent signaled for me to roll down my car window.

"There's been an attack on the World Trade Center," she said with feeling. "Terrorists flew a hijacked airplane full of travelers straight through one of the towers!"

We'd all known about terrorism, but this was something completely unfathomable. Little did we all realize, there would be more of the horrendous onslaught very soon to come. The radio announcer let us in one development at a time.

"A second plan just crashed through the second tower!" There was no doubt about it now. The episode was a pre-conceived attack on the US.

The soon to follow violent tragedies on board two other flights sent tremors across the nation. Fear. Anger. Sorrow. Grief. Who could accurately describe the raw emotions?

As I watched the surreal visual recordings on television, a my mouth dropped. The buildings seemed to melt. What were those items dropping from the towers, I wondered. It didn't take long for the losses of human life to be defined. I shuddered and cried along with those across the entire spectrum of the US. This couldn't be happening to the most powerful country in the world! Apparently, it could.
Fifteen years hence, the reality and liability of 9/11 still haunts us.

The previous experiences I've had dealing with all sorts of property and casualty insurance and the involved claims never would have prepared me for the serious ramifications of the 9/11 lawsuits that go on till this very day. Since that black day, related insurance has evolved. From something that was included into the all-perils commercial catastrophic policies because of the small likelihood of occurrence, terrorism risk insurance is now provided as an added rider to business insurance with government backups. Once viewed as unnecessary by many, today's reality makes this type of coverage a genuine consideration just as accident insurance is to the auto industry and homeowners and renters is to the house and condo dweller.

Encompassing protection against lawsuits for a company's lack of preparedness, actual losses and damages and loss of wages incurred from an attack, as well as counseling services for those suffering from the emotional aftermath, terrorism insurance alongside the protective workers comp has become a sad reflection of our present circumstance.

Worker's compensation is a type of insurance providing compensation including medical benefits to an employee by their employer, who was injured during the job. It is in a way a monetary benefit an employee chose to take against not suing their employer for worker's compensation through the court of law. The compensation law varies from state to state in every country.

Receiving an injury while working on the job (work place accidents) can have unfortunate consequences for employees. It is even more difficult and devastating for their families who were dependent on them. While the physical pain and trauma that an employee or a worker has to deal with can be overwhelming, the financial difficulties that comes with it can be even more challenging. Sudden stopped income and the increasing cost of medical expenses puts enormous pressure on the injured workers and their families. This is the reason why a employee's compensation claim and their benefits are so crucial to helping workers get over in these difficult times.

It is often difficult and considerably challenging for workers to get compensation benefits on time unless you get timely help from an expert compensation attorney. Whether the workers' injury has resulted in partial disability, complete disability or its temporary, each injury case needs to be dealt with separately.

Only an experienced attorney can help secure the correct worker's compensation benefits, as they know how difficult and frustrating it is to fight with an insurance company or an employer much against their wishes.

Worker's compensation cases can be settled either out of courts, in the courts with the help of a worker's comp attorney or even through arbitration - a form of dispute resolution system available in many states.

In most states, before you decide to consult a workers' comp attorney or hire them, check with the employer's working manual or employee handbook. Employee handbook is an excellent resource to refer to as it clearly states the labor best practices.

Whether you are receiving the compensation from your employer directly, from a state insurance company or any other third-party administrator responsible for administering the employers' compensation claims, it is important to know the legal recourse you have with you and how you are being compensated.

In case the employer falls under "self-insurance" category, where they themselves manage and administer all of their workers' compensation liabilities, it is best advised to hire an experienced workers' compensation attorney, as here an employer has the most desire to contest the claims or pay the lest compensation benefits. As all of the benefits and compensations would be going from their own pockets, the employer will be hard pressed to contest any claim and compensate the least.

Thus irrespective of from whom you will receive the workers' compensation benefits, always hire an expert compensation lawyer as they are aware of the challenges and nitty-gritty of the worker compensation laws.

As the new year begins, you have the opportunity to set some business resolutions to complement the resolutions you might have set in your personal life. While you have a huge choice of resolutions you could set, the five highlighted in this article will assist you in creating a positive start to a healthier business for this year and beyond.

1) Resolve to work more fully in your areas of brilliance. It can be tempting to take all the business that comes in, and to try and make clients "fit" when they just don't seem to- but the problem is that each time you try and make something work, you may be moving farther away from your own areas of brilliance and unique talent. Sure, it's likely that you can do many things well- but what if you do fewer things brilliantly? Clients will pay more for brilliant results.

2) Resolve to select for your ideal clients. So much has been written about targeting your ideal client that I won't spend much time on that here. There is a key distinction between knowing your ideal client and actually selecting for your ideal client. The first step is to identify who your ideal clients are, and the second step is to take regular and consistent action to find and select them. This means that you focus on marketing specifically to them, and marketing as widely as you can to attract many of them.

3) Resolve to raise your fees related to your experience. The new year is a good time to examine your fee structure. Chances are that you are more skilled this year than you were last and therefore it might make sense to raise your fees. Even a modest increase can make a difference to your bottom line, and be a subtle- yet powerful- signal to your clients that you are becoming more valuable in your skills and assistance with each passing year.

4) Resolve to streamline your expenses. Streamlining your expenses can be a good way to retain more profit in your business. After all, it makes little sense to raise your fees, and generate more income, just to have all that surplus exit your business as quickly. Streamlining your expenses means that you reduce where you can, without sacrificing necessity. It's likely that you're maintaining at least some services and subscriptions that you aren't using fully. This might be the time to reduce or eliminate these completely.

5) Resolve to improve your expertise. The new year is a good time to ascertain how you might become more skilled and more valuable to your current and future clients. Can you add a new skill? Offer a new service? What would your clients be thrilled if you could do for them?

Again, while there are many resolutions you might choose to focus on, these five are key strategies for improving your business in the new year, and, quite possibly, having your best year ever.
